Waves And Particles

Laura
The wind is wild and whips around me. It catches hold of my arms, my hair, my clothing, only for an instant before letting go. I am buffeted one-way and then another. I become disorientated by the movement. The spray from the sea hovers around me like a mist. I close my eyes breathing in the night air and lick my lips to taste the salty sea.
The waves crash far down below in a thunderous roar. I am kneeling on a cliff under a blanket of stars. The world is one of darkness, the light from the stars creating grey shadows all around me. All of a sudden I am not alone. Looking to my right I smile at Laura. She returns the smile before staring out to sea.
The wind grows stronger, howling all around me as if to follow my emotions. ‘Why’ I want to shout. ‘selfish,’ ‘it was stupid,’ ‘how could you,’ ‘selfish…’
‘…we miss you’
The wind tears away the words as they reach my mouth, and my anger flows out across the sea. And with that anger the night grows calm and all I can hear is the gentle lapping of the waves below.
Laura turns her face to the stars and points up at the endless sky. A look of pure happiness runs across her face – a look I never saw whilst she was living.
‘God’ Laura says simply and I stare up at the twinkling stars, mesmerized by the light. I don’t believe in God but the stars are calling to me too.
I look back at Laura. I have so many things to say; but she has only come to say goodbye, and to let me know she is happy at last. I smile at her until I can no longer see her through the tears. I turn back to the stars and they rush towards me. I become one with the limitless sky and for a moment I am home.
