Avoidance Of Doubt

She had to know
Growing suspicion gnawed at her soul
filling her mind day and night.
'Away' he had said
'Business trip'
'Working late'
Each conversation
Each reason he wouldn't be home
thundered in her head
until she could avoid the doubt no longer
and followed him.
Shaking,
she could barely drive
as she tracked his journey
from their flat to his office.
Only that wasn't where he went.
'Got to work this morning love' he'd said as he'd put the phone in their bedroom down and smiled.
'Urgent case
Sorry'
He didn't look sorry
And he didn't go to the office.
For thirty miles she drove blindly
Tears slipping down her face
as she struggled to keep his car in view.
Finally he turned into the carpark of the grandest hotel in the county
the one he knew she loved.
With holdall in hand he sauntered in nodding at the doorman.
As she slowly lowered her head onto the steering wheel and howled.
Somehow she drove back to their flat.
Gathered her things
Leaving only a note
and a key.
Meanwhile not knowing his deception had been discovered
Her partner served drinks at the bar he worked at for year
His last shift before he could claim the staff benefit of getting married there
free of charge.
He couldn't wait to get home
and propose.
