Middle Of Nowhere

I longed for obscurity
for music to rise up from
the middle of nowhere
and draw me slowly into its depths of solitude,
surrounding me with notes that no one else
could sing or dance to.

Instead the constant beat of questions
slammed against the wall of my existence
until it crumpled
stone by stone,
brick by brick
into the ditch of condemnation.

"All rise"
the court official said
And so they did
every man and woman who had come to see me sentenced.

Closing my exhausted eyes
I thought of cliffs
of waves lapping against jagged rocks
of birds hanging in the ocean air

I thought of new mown grass and smelled its richness as a robin sang and corn swayed in a field caressed by autumns breeze
A rabbit sat with twitching nose...

The judge's sombre voice broke through
as he donned the blackened cap
and called me 'Guilty'

Justice had been done
The court went wild
And I?

I dreamed of picking daisies with my Gran,
of apple pie
of carols round the tree
and
presents......

I dreamed of everything and nothing as they chained my hands and took me back to prison
where I'd die.
