What Would Jesus...

Jesus stood in the park,
the mud and the needles,
the condoms and the cans,
robes resplendent in white,
and he preached tolerance,
but the kids, oblivious
picked up stones
and, well practiced in aim,
fought his godly words.
He continued:
'blessed are the meek'
and they screwed up their faces
and even when, behind Jesus,
appeared a star, and shepherds,
they laughed and knew they had no gold,
or myrrh, or frankincense, to give
because they could barely
afford corn flakes, unless
from a food bank,
and had there been a lamb
they would have slaughtered it
for meat, for there was none,
but had he produced
a thousand fishes
they would have believed in
Him.
And had he turned
water to wine
they would have believed in
Him.
There were many ways
they might have believed in
Him.
