New Year Resolution

The Resolve of Birds
We all resolve to change,
then fail miserably. Like the dodo
forgetting flight, too dumb
to remember,
we should not make promises
we cannot keep. Like parrots,
we repeat our errors,
compounding harm,
subtracting from trust.
We alienate other people
if we told the truth
trying to sound like bluebirds.
While there is no reason to lie,
we do, fearing truth more,
like we were albatross.
We pick at the sinew of excuses
as carrion birds
resolving to find the bone marrow
of truth,
finding instead,
it is already picked clean.
