She Loves Me

I watch her out of the corner of my eye, the cool rim of my glass pressed against my lower lip, tilting so the golden mixture can spill down my throat like honey.

My heart misses a beat, just like every time I look at her. Her silky chocolate waves flow down around her bare shoulders, shimmering in the faint rays of sun from the window.

She seems so out of reach, so untouchable, even though she is mine. I place my glass down on the table as she turns to face me, her cherry lips tilted up in a sugary grin meant just for me and I feel my own lips turn upwards in awe.

"Daniel?" Her voice is like a creamy chocolate desert, decadent and sweet, though I notice the faint undertone of pain and sadness, loss and guilt.

"Yes baby?" He stands up and they both move towards each other, her blue eyes glittering with emotion as they meet his.

"you know I love you, right?" she whispers, her not meant to be red dress clinging to her in all the places he wanted his hands to cling.

He pulled her into his arms, she loved him, no matter how many times she said it he was always surprised and overwhelmed all at once with how amazing it was.

She fit perfectly against him, like two halves of an inseparable puzzle.

"I love you more." He says softly, caringly, and they are the truest words he has ever spoken.

She stares into his eyes as if all the universes secrets are hidden behind his irises and he feels an odd tightening in his chest. He would never love anyone as much as he loved rose, he knows that, she knows that. He only hopes she feels the same way.

He hears the front door bell ring and she pulls away from him slowly, tears welling in her eyes.

"No, don't go. Please... It's all my fault." he says desperately, stepping towards her.

She shakes her head, her eyes suddenly dull and her sun kissed skin turning pale. "I'll come back, always. I promise."

She turns the corner, out of sight an he holds back a sob as his sister enters behind him.

"Daniel. Rose loved you so much, I hope you know that. The accident wasn't your fault. That car came out of nowhere, they were in the wrong lane. It's just bad luck she was sitting in the back because of the labour." she says soothingly when she sees he's got himself worked up again, then she stops and her face pales as she realises she just made things worse.

"She loves me..." he whispers as he sinks back into his chair and refills his glass, the shiny alcohol overflowing his cup and spattering the wood surface of the table "She loves me..."

In the other room, the baby starts crying.
